How to Pin a Screenshot on Windows

Pinning a screenshot lets you keep it visible on top of all other windows while you work. It is perfect for referencing instructions, comparing designs, or keeping a phone number in view while you type.

Pinning a Screenshot

1. Take a screenshot

   Press your capture hotkey and select the region you want, or use full-screen capture. The LamShot toolbar appears after the capture.

2. Click the Pin button

   In the toolbar, click the Pin button — it looks like a pin or thumbtack icon. The screenshot immediately detaches from the toolbar and floats as an independent window on your desktop.

Moving and Resizing the Pinned Window

The pinned window behaves like a lightweight always-on-top panel. To move it, click and drag anywhere on the image itself. The window follows your cursor and can be placed anywhere on any connected monitor.\n\nTo resize it, hover over any edge or corner of the pinned window until a resize cursor appears, then drag to make it larger or smaller. The image scales with the window — there is no minimum size, so you can make it quite small if you just need a small reference.

Always-on-Top Behavior

The pinned window stays above all other open windows, including browsers, editors, and messaging apps. You can click through to other apps normally — the pinned window does not block your interaction with anything beneath it. Just click on another window and it comes into focus while the pinned screenshot remains visible in front.\n\nIf you need to temporarily hide the pinned window, click its minimize button (if visible) or close it and pin it again later.

Pinning Multiple Screenshots

You can pin as many screenshots as you like at the same time. Each becomes its own independent floating window. This is useful when comparing two versions of a design, following multi-step instructions while working in another app, or monitoring several pieces of information simultaneously.\n\nArrange the pinned windows wherever they are least in the way — corners of the screen and the space between your main content and the taskbar are popular spots.

Closing a Pinned Window

To remove a pinned screenshot from your desktop, hover over the pinned window to reveal the close button (X) in its top corner. Click X to dismiss it. This does not delete any saved file — it only removes the floating overlay from your screen.

Annotating Before Pinning

If you want to add arrows, labels, or highlights to a screenshot before pinning it, open the annotation editor first, make your changes, and then click the Pin button in the editor toolbar. The pinned version will include all your annotations.
