How to Take Screenshots Faster on Windows

LamShot makes capturing your screen fast and flexible. Whether you want to grab a specific region, the entire screen, or a single window, you can do it all with a quick hotkey.

Starting a Capture with a Hotkey

The fastest way to take a screenshot is with a keyboard shortcut. By default, LamShot assigns a hotkey for region capture (often F1 or a custom combo you set during setup). Press it at any time — even when another app is in the foreground — and LamShot instantly activates.\n\nYour cursor changes to a crosshair, and a thin overlay dims the screen slightly to signal that capture mode is active. You can press Escape at any time to cancel.

Selecting a Region

1. Click and drag to draw your capture area

   Hold the left mouse button and drag from one corner of the area you want to capture to the opposite corner. A bright rectangle shows exactly what will be included. Release the mouse button to capture.

2. Use the dimension display for precision

   While dragging, LamShot shows the current width and height in pixels next to your cursor. This is useful when you need an exact-size capture — for example, a 1280×720 thumbnail.

3. Adjust the selection before confirming

   After you draw a selection, you can drag the edges or corners to fine-tune it. Press Enter or click the checkmark to confirm and capture, or press Escape to start over.

Full-Screen Capture

To capture everything on your primary monitor, press the full-screen hotkey (configurable in Settings). LamShot takes the screenshot instantly without any dragging.\n\nIf you have multiple monitors, each monitor can be captured individually using its own shortcut, or you can capture all monitors combined — both options are available in Settings.

What Happens After Capture

The moment you release the mouse (or trigger a full-screen capture), LamShot processes the image and displays a floating toolbar next to your capture. The toolbar gives you one-click access to annotate, copy to clipboard, save to disk, pin on the desktop, scan for QR codes, run OCR, and upload for sharing.\n\nIf you have auto-copy enabled in Settings, the screenshot is already on your clipboard the instant the toolbar appears — you can paste it straight into a chat, email, or document without any extra clicks.

Tips for Better Captures

Capture tooltips by hovering over the element before pressing the hotkey — the tooltip stays visible during the brief capture-mode activation.\n\nFor scrolling web pages or long documents, check whether your version of LamShot includes a scrolling capture option in the capture menu (accessible by right-clicking the tray icon).\n\nIf the hotkey conflicts with another app, see the "Change Screenshot Hotkeys" guide to assign a different shortcut.
