How to Save Screenshots on Windows with LamShot

LamShot gives you full control over where and how your screenshots are saved. You can let it save automatically in the background, or save each screenshot manually after reviewing it.

Setting Up Auto-Save

1. Open Settings

   Right-click the LamShot tray icon and select Settings. Navigate to the Save or After Capture section.

2. Enable auto-save

   Check the box for "Automatically save screenshots" or "Save to disk after capture." Once enabled, LamShot saves a file every time you take a screenshot without any extra steps from you.

3. Choose your save folder

   Click Browse or the folder icon next to the save path field. Navigate to the folder where you want screenshots stored — for example, C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Screenshots. Click Select Folder to confirm. LamShot will create the folder if it does not already exist.

Choosing a File Format

LamShot supports PNG and JPG (JPEG) output formats. Open the Format dropdown in the Save settings to switch between them.\n\nPNG is lossless, meaning no quality is lost regardless of what is in the screenshot. It is the best choice for text, code, UI screenshots, and anything where sharpness matters. PNG files are larger than JPG.\n\nJPG uses compression that reduces file size significantly — sometimes by 80% or more — at the cost of minor quality loss. JPG is a good choice for photos or screenshots you need to share quickly over slow connections. Avoid JPG when the screenshot contains small text, as compression artifacts can make it hard to read.

File Naming

By default, LamShot names files automatically using a date-and-time pattern such as Screenshot_2026-08-13_14-30-05.png. This ensures files sort chronologically in File Explorer and never overwrite each other.\n\nIf you prefer a different naming pattern, look for a File Name Template field in the Save settings. You can typically use tokens like {date}, {time}, and {counter} to build a custom pattern.

Saving Manually from the Toolbar

1. Take a screenshot and wait for the toolbar

   After capturing, the LamShot toolbar appears next to the image. You can annotate the screenshot first if needed.

2. Click the Save button

   Click the Save icon (floppy disk or disk symbol) in the toolbar. A Save As dialog appears so you can choose the file name, location, and format for this individual screenshot.

3. Confirm the save

   Navigate to your preferred folder, type a name if you want a custom one, select the format, and click Save. The file is written to disk immediately.

Combining Auto-Save with Other Actions

Auto-save and auto-copy to clipboard can both be active simultaneously. This is a popular setup: every screenshot is saved to disk for your records and also placed on the clipboard so you can paste it into whatever you are working on right away.
